The wild hyena-men who dwell in the dusty savanna and along the riverbanks are, perhaps, the most resilient of all races. They need to be. With a long history of piracy and treachery, this race of mercenaries, rogues, and bandits are despised by most other peoples. Surviving at the fringes of other civilizations for centuries by providing services other races found too distasteful to dirty their hands with, the Gnolls have suffered through betrayals, pogroms, and bigotry. Through the worst of times, because of their strong culture and adaptability, the gnolls have always survived. They are still here, and they're not going away.

Gnolls can convert certain troops to other troop types. They can turn Fighters, Rangers and Archers from one type to another, as they choose. Each change takes one turn. So they can, for example, turn 15k fighters to rangers for exploration of maps using one turn, then go to attack runs on the new acquired targets by using a turn to change 10k of their rangers to fighters and another turn to change the rest 5k rangers to archers.

As one SM player said, "Gnolls own in an OM uni!" That is, Let's say high percent Archers are selling for cheap on the OM (that's open market). However, equal percentage Fighters are selling for quite a hefty fee. The gnoll can buy the cheap Archers, convert them to Fighters (using their special), then sell the Fighters on the OM for quite a profit!
Gnolls have bad study and bad mana mod. That means, choose what you study wisely, and stick to spells that are more of a "nifty spell to have" rather than one that requires lots of mana to use effectively. You have other methods of dealing damage, don't waste the limited study you will have on those kinds of spells.
